Description

NGC4157 is a large, almost edge-on spiral galaxy. Its angular size is 9.0'x1.0' and it shows some grainy extensions and dust lanes.
Radial velocity: 843 km/s. Distance: 38 million light years. Diameter: 99000 light years.

NGC4157 belongs to the Ursa Major group, which includes a few hudreds of galaxies, mostly spirals. About 60 of them have a diameter larger than 30000 light years and their average distance is about 55 million light years (recession speed about 1000km/s).
